Mont Blanc Marathon weekend
A big Eryri crowd headed over to the Alps for the weekend to partake in the some of the 4 races that were held from Friday to Sunday in Chamonix.
First off at 4am on a cracking Friday morning was Matt Fortes and Johnny Moore in the 80k ultra which climbed a mammoth 6000 metres!!! Both ran separately but amazingly came in after each other. Matt finishing in 30th but 1st Brit in a colossal 13 hours and 38 minutes, with Johnny in 31st in 13.42 and 7th vet 40 – super performances! Incredibly 471 people finished the race!
On the Friday evening it was the Vertical kilometre, this measured in at just over 3k but climbed 1000 metres! Paul Jenks flew the Welsh flag finishing in 52nd in 45.42 and 7th vet. Becky Law – back from a broken wrist finished 32nd lady in 57.37. 336 runners finished.
On the Saturday the infamous Cross Mont Blanc was run, measuring in at 23k with 1400 metres of climb. Braichmelyn hitman running for Ambleside AC – Hugh O’Donnell ran well to finish in 59th but 2nd Brit in 2hrs 32mins. 1307 runners finished!
An hour later it was time for the 10k which climbed 300metres. Paul Jenks once again led the Welsh home finishing in 57th overall and 15th vet 40 in 52.22. In the ladies the Eryri performance of the weekend came from Bronwen Jenkinson who finished 15th lady in 55.56 – just over 3 minutes behind her Dad but more importantly 2nd junior lady. Becky Law followed soon after in 22nd in 57.44. There were 699 runners!
The final race, on the Sunday was the Marathon which climbs 2500 metres. Math Roberts managed to stick with Kilian Journet for 5k before being dropped and finishing 30 minutes back in 19th in 4hrs and 5 minutes. 1922 runners finished the race.
A highly recommended weekend racing in some of the best races the world over – overall a gargantuan 4735 runners ran in the 4 races!
