Stanley Park 2

Paul Wathan followed up his 2nd placing of the 1st Stanley Park, Blackpool 10k on Saturday 28th February with runners up position again in the 2nd 10k race on the Sunday 1st March in exactly the same time of the previous day 35:19 behind race winner Callum Grant (Liverpool Harriers) 34:18. Callum had not raced the previous day as had Gemma Morgans who followed up her race win the previous day with a 2nd placing on the Sunday finishing 30th overall in a time of 42:00.
There were 295 finishers.
A fantastic effort by both.

Rhyl 10 mile

There were 6 Eryri Harriers competing in the Rhyl 10mile road race on Sunday 22nd February and though the conditions were not as windy as last year, it was still quite blustery while the high tides ensured that the runners got their feet wet!! Paul Wathan ran very well to finish 3rd overall in a time of 57:13 followed by food poisoning victim Arwel Lewis 29th overall & 2nd MV/55 in a time of 65:42. 49th Gary Porter-Jones 68:48. 53rd & 4th female Gemma Morgans 69:13 a Personal best by 4m 42s! 385th & 2nd MV/65 Roy Jardine 1:43:55 with 415th & 1st MV/70 Iorwerth Roberts 1:49:04.
The race was won by Gareth Williams (U/A) in a time of 55:59 ahead of Chris Hollinshead (Cannock & Stafford) 56:55. There were 466 finishers in the well organised Run Wales event.

Blackpool Stanley Park 10k

Though Paul Wathan ran very well to finish 2nd in the Blackpool Stanley Park 10k on Saturday 28th February, he was upstaged by his partner Gemma Morgans who finished 26th overall and 1st female in a time of 41:55, a personal best for the distance by 12 seconds. Gemma also had a 2m 11s winning margin! Still, Paul did well to finish 2nd in a time of 35:19 behind race winner Phil Eccleston (Burnden RR) 34:52. There were 313 finishers. No doubt Paul and Gemma will be determined to do well again today in the 2nd 10k race of the Stanley Park weekend!
In the Conwy parkrun’s so far this year, After finishing 2nd in the 1st ever event on 10th January in 18:05, Paul won four on the trot! 31st Jan – 17:27. 7th Feb – 17:09. 14th Feb – 17:23 & 21st Feb – 17:38 while Gemma has won 3 of her 5 Conwy parkruns: 17th Jan- 1st 20:46. 31st Jan – 1st 20:42. 7th Feb – 1st 20:04. 14th Feb – 2nd 20:14 & 21st Feb – 2nd 20:16.

Pipe Dream – Report & Results

Pipe Dream 2015

Records fell at Saturday’s 11th running of the Pipe Dream race from Dolgarrog, Conwy Valley.

This was the second fixture of the North Wales Series, and the first of the Open Welsh Champs, and it would seem this drew two of the region’s fastest, namely (our?) Math Roberts and Aberystwyth’s Felipe Jones to do battle. In addition, the in-form Katie Beecher of Mynydd Du made an appearance to show the North Wales ladies how to do it.

Katie ran away with it, winning in 38.08, in 12th overall and a mere ten seconds over the record. The young but ever improving Eryri Bronwen Jenkinson followed up, but not challenging at nearly 6 minutes behind. The also improving Louise Emery-Jones took third, 6 seconds under the fv40 record, but sadly a couple of months short of turning 40! Maybe next year.

Back to the men, and Math led strongly from the off, gaining a 29 second lead over Felipe by the summit. With Math hardly a slouch on a downhill one would think he’d have it in the bag, but an amazing descent through the woods from Felipe brought him back level with Math by the time they reached the road.  A sprint for line concluded with a single second separating them, Math taking a satisfying win in 33.16, smashing the 2011 record by nearly two minutes.
Dylan Lewis of Sarn Helen took third.

In the v40’s John Parkinson took the win and 4th overall in 36.26, which takes a minute off the v40 record; and Jenny Heming comfortably led the ladies in 46.34.

Steve Toogood of Buckley narrowly beat Eryri’s Michael Belshaw by 13 seconds for the v50 slot.

Don Williams finished off the record breaking bonanza by taking over 5 minutes off his v70 record and comfortably winning the category.  Of note is the fact that both second and third finishers namely John Morris and Eryri’s Geoff Fielding were also inside the old record.

89 runners in total and the weather held off for an enjoyable day all round.

WFRA champs tables will be updated and published soon after each fixture.
