GB Vest for John Spill

GB VEST for JOHN SPILL
Eryri’s John Spill has achieved his aim of gaining Great Britain representative honours following his 2nd placing in the World Championship Trial race at Betws-y-Coed on Saturday 22nd August where in pouring rain and very slippery conditions, John went out hard on the tough two lap 8.4 mile up and down course up to Llyn Elsi and back, John only missed out by 6 seconds (35:08) from winning the race, beaten only by experienced GB athlete, Jacob Adkin (Scotland) 35:02. Owen Roberts finished 19th 39:10.
John now has four weeks to prepare for the World Championships event which are held on the same course in Betws-y-Coed on Saturday 19th September where he will be up against the Worlds best junior mountain running athletes.
Congratulations John.
In the senior women’s race incorporated into the junior men’s event, Andrea Rowlands representing Wales in the Home International finished 21st 43:48 ahead of club colleague Lydia Sharpe who gallantly carried on after a heavy fall to finish 22nd 43:59.
In the one lap Under 20 women’s race, Bronwen Jenkinson finished 17th 22:34.
In the three lap men’s race, Rob Samuel representing Wales made his comeback on to the international scene following a long injury lay off to finish 26th 55:21.
Wales had to be content with winning Bronze Team medals in both the male and female sections.
The first race of the day was the Welsh under 17 trial for the British & Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships which are held on the morning of the World Championships at Betws-y-Coed. In the one lap event, Steffan Williams finished 4th 21:00 and 5th Annbelle McQueen 23:01.
Overall, a great days quality racing despite the wet and slippery conditions.

Gladstone 9 Report and Results

Gladstone 9 Race Report 09/08/2015

Once again, we were granted perfect weather conditions & good visibility for this year’s Gladstone 9 race, while the rest of Wales endured the Summer 2015 drizzle to which we’ve become accustomed. 49 started the race, & 47 finished (& Elsi, the best Diabetic Assistance Dog in the world!). The feedback has all been excellent, with many comments about the wonderful views, the fantastic marshals, the post-race flapjacks & the amazing prizes.

The race was won by John Hunt, MV40 from Dark Peak, in a time of 1:22:01, with Buckley’s Simon Edwards, also MV40, close on his heels in 1:22:11, & Helsby’s Jim O’Hara third in 1:22:55. Like last year, there were only three Eryri finishers in the top ten, with MV60 Steve P. Jones finishing in an amazing fourth place in 1:24:09, beating the next MV40, 5th overall, NWRR’s Mark Davies (1:24:59) & the first MV50, Eryri’s Michael Belshaw who was eighth overall in 1:30:12. It’s interesting that there were only 5 senior men in the first twenty finishers. Where are all the ‘youngsters’?!

The first lady across the line was Altrincham AC’s Ann-Marie Jones, who finished in seventeenth place, smashing the FV60 record with her amazing time of 1:41:48. The next two ladies to finish were Eryri’s Nia Albiston in 1:44:19 & Kate Worthington in 1:47:13. The first FV50, Denbigh’s Emma Collins, had a great run in 1:48:56, beating the first FV40, her team mate Victoria Whitehead (1:52:17). The first local was yours truly, but there again, the race does take place in my fantastic ‘back garden’……!

Our sincere thanks go to all the many marshals and helpers, without whom we would not have been able to safely organise the race. We are very grateful for the generous sponsorship & support provided by X-Ray Minerals, Fletcher & Poole Estate Agents & Frwythau DJ, which enabled us to issue a colour map of the route to everyone, & fantastic fossils & fruit baskets as prizes. We also owe a huge vote of thanks to the staff of the Gladstone pub for their hospitality & cooperation, & for providing a meal voucher as a prize.

A small financial contribution will be given to the WFRA, & we are pleased to announce that Diabetes UK & the Nepal Earthquake Appeal will also each receive a £100 donation.
