Another win for Paul Wathan, though his first of the year at the event, comfortably winning by over a minute in a time of 17:20 with Gemma Morgans making it a double success in a time of 20:03, just 3 seconds off her PB.
An unfortunate clash with the Anglesey Half Marathon due to a venue and race date change but, at least 3 Eryri Harriers turned out to represent the club in the 5.1 mile race which was run in drier but cold conditions as the rain and sleet relented just before the 11am start, just a few puddles to negotiate along the race route! Eryri were led home by 92nd (1stMV/60) Derek Weaver 33:24 followed by: 102nd Arwel Lewis 33:58 and 158th Ashley Wager 36:38. There were 318 finishers.
A very good win for Richard Roberts on a very wet day in a time of 72:59 comfortably ahead of Richard Skates (Prestatyn RC) 73:15. In total, there were 24 Eryri Harriers competing amongst the 1227 drenched finishers.
Sunday 19th February. There were 7 Eryri Harriers competing led home by 4th placed Alun Vaughan 71:08 with good runs by: 7th Richard Roberts 71:24 and 15thPaul Wathan 73:53 (PB) There was also a PB for Emlyn Owen with a time of 1:22:05. There were 1391 finishers.
Sunday 12th February. Rob Samuel, though finishing 2nd overall to Matt Clowes (39:57) won the Welsh 10k Championships on a very windy day in a time of 31:29. In total, there were 28 Eryri Harriers competing with Bronwen Jenkinson being Eryri’s other main category winner (FU/20) in a time of 38:39. There were 675 finishers.
It was a good day out for youth and veterans alike at this year’s Pipe Dream, with two under 23’s in the top three (one of them under 18), but crowned by a Vet 40. Felipe Jones (v40) of Sarn Helen and clubmate Sion Price (u23) travelled a long way to take the top two slots, with Felipe having no trouble with a nearly two minute margin by the end, smashing John Parkinson’s v40 record in the process.
Not so easy behind him, as Max Dunford (u18) running for St Davids College, narrowly beat John P for the final podium position.
Eryri’s Miranda Grant had no trouble winning the ladies, with a strong performance leaving her three minutes clear of Sian Williams of Hebog. Lois Lee (u18) of St Davids took 3rd.
Great to see some young blood doing well in what is a sea of v40’s these days. Thanks go to Math Roberts for encouraging and facilitating the St Davids College pupils to attend. No doubt they will be making further appearances this season.
One notable performance this year came in the form of Steve P Jones. SPJ absolutely destroyed Alan Duncan’s 2013 v60 record by 2.01 minutes, finishing 11th overall in the process and only 12 seconds behind Miranda. One to watch for this year’s British Champs perhaps?
Pictured are John Parkinson climbing well up the initial pipe incline, with Miranda battling hard behind. And Gary PJ enjoying himself in his new Eryri cycle top!
