Pipe Dream results & report

Pipe Dream 2017

It was a good day out for youth and veterans alike at this year’s Pipe Dream, with two under 23’s in the top three (one of them under 18), but crowned by a Vet 40.  Felipe Jones (v40) of Sarn Helen and clubmate Sion Price (u23) travelled a long way to take the top two slots, with Felipe having no trouble with a nearly two minute margin by the end, smashing John Parkinson’s v40 record in the process.

Not so easy behind him, as Max Dunford (u18) running for St Davids College, narrowly beat John P for the final podium position.

Eryri’s Miranda Grant had no trouble winning the ladies, with a strong performance leaving her three minutes clear of Sian Williams of Hebog.  Lois Lee (u18) of St Davids took 3rd.

Great to see some young blood doing well in what is a sea of v40’s these days.  Thanks go to Math Roberts for encouraging and facilitating the St Davids College pupils to attend. No doubt they will be making further appearances this season.

One notable performance this year came in the form of Steve P Jones.  SPJ absolutely destroyed Alan Duncan’s 2013 v60 record by 2.01 minutes, finishing 11th overall in the process and only 12 seconds behind Miranda.  One to watch for this year’s British Champs perhaps?

Pictured are John Parkinson climbing well up the initial pipe incline, with Miranda battling hard behind.   And Gary PJ enjoying himself in his new Eryri cycle top!

An extra ‘Long’ now in the Welsh Championships

An extra ‘Long’ now in the Welsh Championships
Peris Horseshoe to be included
Dear Welsh Fell Runners,
Those of you who are interested in completing the 2017 WFRA Open Welsh Championships will have spotted that this year only one Long race (Preseli) was included in the Series, and that there is a requirement to complete a Long to qualify.
We have since received feedback from members who have commented that this set up wasn’t conducive to a successful and inclusive championship.  After some committee discussion it has been decided to add an additional Long race this year, namely Peris Horseshoe, making the Welsh Champs now a series of 7 races.  Hopefully this will now encourage more members to qualify for the Championship series.
The original decision was correctly made at the AGM after some debate, however due to the limited numbers at the AGM the outcome of that debate perhaps hasn’t been fully representative.  There is a danger in making this change that we are seen to be going against the decision at the AGM, and in fact this is the case, but we hope that members understand the reason and support it.
It does show the importance of members expressing their views, and ideally attending the AGM.  It also demonstrates that we listen to the feedback of members when we haven’t quite got it right.
Reminder that V60s and under 23’s are not required to complete a Long.
Looking forward to a great fellracing year, one which kicks off this weekend at Tarren Hendre, as the first counter in the North Wales Series.

Borders League – Record Turnout

431 runners – many having completed cross-country events the previous day – made the 10 a.m. start and braved the chill winds which blew throughout across West Cheshire’s Chester Spring 5 mile course. In so doing, they helped set all manner of turnout records – exceeding the previous overall record turnout by 61, setting a new male turnout record of 297, and a new female turnout record of 134. Wallasey AC also set a record in fielding 65 club members but disappointingly after such a very good start to the season at Caernarfon, Eryri only had the five athletes competing. Steffan Williams led the way in 44th place overall in a new personal best time for the distance of 29:37 followed by: 124th (3rd MV/55) Arwel Lewis 32:27 pacing 125th placed and 1st MV/60 Derek Weaver 32:30. 191st Ashley Wager 34:37 and 424th Roy Jardine 50:25.
The next race is at Birkenhead Park on Sunday 4th December 2016 at 11am. Four laps of the park = 5.5 miles.
ParkRun Double success:
Huw Owen won the latest Penrhyn Parkrun on Saturday 5th November in a time of 17:08. Not sure if he had his dog pulling him along? On the same day further up the coast, Paul Wathan warmed up for the afternoon’s cross country race by winning the Conwyn Parkrun in a time of 17:56 while his partner Gemma Morgan missed out by one second from being the first female home in a time of 21:11. It was Paul’s 18th Conwy Parkrun win!
If winning the Parkrun wasn’t enough, at 3pm afternoon Paul represented Eryri at the North Wales Cross Country League in Llandudno where he finished 19th overall and was second man home for the club, a truly outstanding effort.

Borders League – Race 2 info

The 2nd race of the Borders Road Running League takes place at Upton, nr Chester this Sunday 6th November with an earlier start time than usual of 10am.
After the first race of the season at Caernarfon, Eryri’s men and women currently lead their respective 2nd Divisions; and hopefully we can keep the momentum going with a good turnout at Upton on a measured 5 mile race route.
Anybody requiring transport to the event should contact Arwel Lewis: 07772302411. email: arweleryri@gmail.com for further information. If there is enough interest Arwel will arrange for a mini bus for transport to the event.
