Welsh Athletics Statement Covid -19

The Board of Welsh Athletics met yesterday, 23rd March, to discuss the Corona Virus situation in relation to athletics in Wales. Following the further restrictions on movement put in place by the UK Government last night, they agreed the following updates to our previous statement issued on 17th March:

  1. Extending the suspension of all athletics activity in Wales to the 31st May. [Initially this had been agreed to the end of April]. This suspension includes all organised athletics activity with the UK, including all competitions, formal club activities, running groups, and all Education activity (coach, official, teacher).
  1. Strengthening our position on coaching activity – We are now mandating that all physical coaching ceases, and only be conducted via virtual means during this period. Bringing groups of people together to train, however small, can no longer be permitted under the strict ‘Stay at home’ measures implemented by the UK & Welsh Governments

“These decisions have not been taken lightly, and have been made in light of the continuing and real risk to life and to the NHS posed by the spread of the COVID-19 virus in Wales and the UK. We must now do all we can do. We would ask that the athletics community in Wales continues to help one another by staying connected and supportive of each other whilst at home in these unprecedented times. We will continue to review the situation in line with Government and Public Health guidance.”

This morning Welsh Athletics, along with the other Home Countries have decided on a number of immediate actions in relation to how the sport of Athletics will respond to the threat of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Welsh Athletics in cooperation with UK Athletics have decided to suspend all planned organised athletics activity until the end of April where the situation will be reviewed once more:

  • This suspension includes all organised athletics activity with the UK, including competitions and leagues, member clubs, running groups and races until the end of April.
  • All Education activity (coach, official, teacher) will cease until the end of April. The aim will be to re-schedule all courses to a later date.
  • Welsh Athletics is advocating that clubs and groups should not be undertaking training, competitive or other related activities during this period, and it is already apparent that parts of the sport are already showing their own leadership and are acting in this respect.

We have made this decision in accordance with the directives outlined by the government through the Prime Minister in his statement on Monday afternoon.

Welsh athletics would like to thank all members of the athletics community IN Wales for their support at this challenging time. We will endeavour to maintain regular, open communication as this situation develops. Please prioritise and support the health and wellbeing of yourselves and those you can within the Welsh Athletics family.

CLUB PRESENTATION EVENING

 

The annual Club Presentation Evening will be held on Saturday, 9th March, 7 for 7.30pm at the Split Willow Restaurant, Llanfairfechan, LL33 0PA.

The ticket price is £13 for seniors & £5 for U14s, to include a hot buffet, the presentation of last season’s awards & what’s likely to be an informative & amusing address by Russell Bentley.

All members, their partners, friends & families are welcome – it would be great to have everyone out to celebrate the success of the club’s champions & heroes/heroines……

Club Presentation Evening

Notice for your diaries: The Club Presentation Evening will be held on Sat, 9th March (Pipe Dream race day) in Llanberis, or within easy driving distance of Llanberis. All the usual stuff, including buffet/bar/presentation of awards to last season’s winners/surprise guest speaker etc etc. Everyone welcome. Venue/ticket price TBC in the next few days once the committee has made its decision on various quotes & options, so watch this space for a further announcement very soon…..

 

AGM, positions available

Dear Member,

It’s that time of year where the AGM is upon us and the opportunity to shape the future of the club presents itself.

For this year the AGM will be held at the Split Willow in Llanfairfechan on Tuesday 20th November at 7pm for 7.30pm and food is provided free of charge. We hope as many club members will be in attendance as possible.

As well as discussing club matters the committee for 2018/2019 will be elected. A number of current members are not standing for re-election and so we are looking for new members to join the committee and add their voice to how the club proceeds.

Please note that all roles will be voted for on the night so if you have any interest in any of the positions please get in touch with myself or any committee member and we will happily discuss things further.

The following roles are to be fully vacated at this years AGM and so we are definitely looking for new people to fill these positions:

Chairman – lead committee meetings, make decisions as and when required (Usually with committee approval), be the figurehead for the club when required (special events) (Stuart McDonald)

Vice-chairman – stand in if Chairman not available (Sioned Rowlands)

Cross country running secretary – mobilise runners for XC events, organise transport, organise (with lots of help!) an XC event on our patch (no event in 18/19 possibly one for 2019/20), report to committee meetings (Becki Law)

Fell running secretary – mobilise runners for events (particularly champs races and select teams for relays), organise transport, report to committee (Paul Jenkinson)

Firstly, let me say that committee meetings are not just a tea and biscuit fest and nor are they a borefest!! There are always items that require discussion and there a number of things that will continue to be developed over the coming year. Being a member of the committee is enjoyable and empowering as you know you are making decisions that hopefully have a positive impact on a number of people.

The current postholders are in brackets above so if you wish to have a discussion with them please don’t hesitate to contact them (I can facilitate this if required).

Please don’t assume that somebody will step forward, if you want to be a part of it please let us know. In an ideal world we will have candidates before the AGM so that we avoid the awkward moment where I ask if we have anyone to take a role on and everyone looks in the opposite direction!

We look forward to seeing you on the 20th and shaping the next committee to lead Eryri Harriers into 2019 and beyond.
