Inter-regional cross country championships in Brecon

Helen helps the NW team to second

Well done to all runners who represented North Wales at the Inter-regionals yesterday in Brecon – it was muddy as it should be, but drier than expected and a varied course.

Matthew Fortes made an excellent debut for North Wales and ran a consistently strong 3 laps coming in 41st overall and 17th out of the 35 in the MM35 category. In the same 9.4k race, Arwel Lewis also had a strong run and came in 90th overall and 6th out of the 29 in the MM55 category. Well-run, determined laps by both – really well done!

Annabelle McQueen ran in the U17 girls category and worked together with her team mates and came in a brilliant 14th overall, with 3 of her team mates coming in 15th, 16th and 17th – well done ladies!

Becki Law and Helen Blair ran 2 laps of the 6.2k course and came in 41st and 46th, with Helen avoiding any calf problems AND helping the North Wales MV45 team to second place – brilliant effort!!!!

Really nice event to bring together lots of the people you see at the league events, but all wearing the same vest – well done everyone!

Special mention to Matthew Fortes for driving the Eryri people down to Brecon and back – star!

Bangor XC report

Bangor XC – fantastic team effort running and helping

Podium positions for individuals and teams!

Bangor XC on Saturday 26th November – what a great big team effort the day was – it simply could not have happened without the many people who helped with Eryri’s hosting of the 3rd fixture in the North Wales Cross Country League.

Maggie and Alwyn Oliver, Stuart McDonald and Matthew Fortes were up at the ‘crack of dawn’ helping to mark the course and then still managed to run/marshall/babysit/help with carparking/take the course down at the end. Ann, Sharon Owen and Karen made sandwiches and cakes and completely and utterly just sorted the lovely refreshments, Mike Blake and Arwel Lewis made sure we had the equipment we needed and the wonderful Iorwerth Roberts, Sioned Ellen Rowlands, Tina Louise McDonnell, Anthony Paul Davies, Ellie Salisbury, Tamsin O’Neil, Sue, Eric (Becca Roberts’s Mum and Dad and Jed the marshalling dog) marshalled the sunny but also muddy and cold course. Many thanks also to Mair and Wils for sorting the timesheets, St Johns for the first aid cover and last but definitely not least, Bernie Jones for race refereeing and Dave Williams for his support too. Big shout out to all of you cake-bakers out there too and Moel Siabod cafe – thank you – I believe there were actually a few left this year and went with runners to the relays the following day!

Big drum roll also for the cake takings too – we made a grand total of £306.10 for the club which will cover the cost of the playing fields and first aid and the spread also got a mention in Bernie’s report so great job everyone!

Now to Eryri’s results, well done to all who took part – it was very tough going on the muddy course but there were some absolutely amazing results!

In the first race of the day, Miranda Grant was an amazing 2nd overall in her first cross country race for 6 years, very closely followed by Andrea Rowlands in fantastic 3rd! Ever-strong ladies were next, with Tammy Ddrwg Lewis-Jones (23rd and 2nd V45) followed by Louise Emery-Jones (41st), Ellie Salisbury, Annie Williams (1st and 2nd V55), Jennifer Williamson (63rd), Alexandra Fletcher (84th), Alison Donnelly (89th), Becca Roberts  (92nd) and Maggie Oliver (94th) – brilliant effort ladies! Don Williams was 63rd overall in the same race too – well done Don!

In the men’s race, Rob Samuel literally flew round making the mud look like tarmac and was a brilliant 1st place!! Paul Wathan was next in 15th and then Matthew Fortes in 26th! Then Paul Jones (30th, 4th V40) followed by Russell Owen (1st V55), Emlyn Owen (58th), Arwel Lewis (2nd V55), Gary Porter Jones (68th) and Maldwyn Evans (124th) – fantastic team effort by all!

Here is a link to the results:

Welsh cross country vest for Annie William

Team bronze medal in Glasgow!

Eryri Harriers’ masters athlete Annie Williams was selected to represent Wales in the W55 category at the British and Irish Masters Cross Country Championships at Tolcross Park, Glasgow last weekend (12th November). In field of the best cross country athletes across the country, Annie ran fantastically to help the Welsh team to a brilliant bronze medal, ahead of Ireland and Northern Ireland. On a ‘lovely upsy-downsy, quite springy course with bright and clear weather’, Annie was a fantastic 14th in her category, 136th overall and 3rd counter for the Welsh team in what was a race of a very high standard – well done Annie for representing Wales at such a high level! Special mention should also go for Annie’s logistical efforts in getting to the event which involved driving (a lot), flying there and back in a day and setting up a jewellery stall at a craft fair in between!  See link below for overall results:

Great video to get a feel for the event here:

Very well done Annie!

Llandudno XC

Fantastic team and individual results at Llandudno XC on Saturday – a brilliant turn-out with Eryri working hard and moving up the standings!

Second race of the day but ‘men first’ this time to celebrate such a great turn-out. It was great to see Gwyn Owen (1st MV40 and 10th overall) and Paul Watham (19th) making a storming debut for this year’s cross country season. Matt Fortes (22nd) followed closely continuing his great season so far and, in his first cross country ever, Paul Jones (27th) also had a fantastic run. Rory O’Donnell, who just made the start line had a strong run and was in next (36th), followed by Russel Owen (1st MV55 and 42nd). Good packing by Arwel Lewis, Gary Porter-Jones (64th and 68th), then James McQueen (78th), Dils Rowlands (lucky number 100th!) and SPJ (107th, recovering from injury). Steffan Evans had a great sprint finish with a few from GOG triathlon, coming in 118th and great to see Maldwyn Evans (124th) and Eurwyn Edwards (133rd) completing the brilliant team effort from the Eryri Men – well done all – both teams were second on the day with the male masters team moving up to 6th overall and the senior men’s team have now moved up to 3rd overall!

In the first race of the day, our Eryri ladies were also fantastic. Andrea Rowlands set a brilliant pace coming in a very strong 3rd and closely followed by the ever-improving Annabelle McQueen in 5th – fantastic running ladies! A strong run from Tammy Lewis-Jones (17th and 1st WV45), followed by Becki Law, Megan Hughes and Lou Emery-Jones (23rd, 24th and 31st). Unfortunately Helen Blair had to pull out with a pulled calf muscle but would have been ‘in the running’ here too. Ellie Salisbury was next in 53rd, then Jenny Williamson (67th), Alex Fletcher (86th), Becca Roberts (93rd) and Maggie Oliver (94th). Brilliant teamwork – both of our women’s teams are now in 1st place overall!

BIG MENTION to our two amazing male vet 70’s – Don Williams and Alwyn Oliver – coming in 70th and 90th in the same race and a 3rd and 5th in their category!

A second BIG MENTION to the great supporters/helpers we had too – Sioned Rowlands, Stu Mcdonald, Neale Lewis-Jones, Craig Jones, Iorwerth Roberts, Judith Leslie and Becca’s Mum and Dad (Sue and Eric) – thanks and sorry if I missed anyone!

Full results available here:

Looking forward to the next one at Treborth Playing fields, Bangor on 26th November – Eryri are hosting so watch this space for reminders about CAKES, CAKES, CAKES – we need to go for it this year! And also, if you can help marshall or mark the course before the event, please let me know 🙂 Cheers, Becki
