Keswick Festival

Big thanks to the Eryri runners who ran at Keswick over the weekend of 21/22nd May as part of our Eryri team. We are still endeavouring to find out how we did in the Team event so for now I’ll simply summarise the individual performances which were excellent.
First up were Emlyn Roberts & myself in the 25K setting off in pouring rain, thankfully conditions soon improved but we still had a rather deep & tricky river crossing to contend with. Emlyn came home strongly in 33rd place out of 417 in 2 Hours 30 Minutes with me chasing his tail some 4 minutes behind in 47th place. To cap Emlyn’s performance he won his O. 50’s category after a bit of a ding dong battle with his nearest rival which was only settled in the closing mile.
Next came Judy Jones who had stepped into the breach late in the day to provide our only 5K entrant, despite her normal preference for much longer distances where her stamina can come more to the fore. Judy placed 107th out of approx. 250, very respectable indeed.
Sunday dawned more or less at the same time as Llion Iwan set off on a very demanding 50K at 6:00 am! The route took him firstly around the East & South of Borrowdale before heading further afield to Buttermere & beyond. He returned some 6 Hours & 2 minutes later placing a very good 25th out of 180 looking like there was plenty of running left in him but having given plenty to the cause.
Finally it was time for Steve Jones to step up for the 10K race which included the like of Ricky Lightfoot. Ricky won by a clear margin but arguably Steve, who was carrying a knee injury into the race, arguably upstaged him finishing a remarkable 16th place out of a field of over 600, not bad for a 61 year old but there again what else would you expect from Steve.
As we exchanged experiences post races I think I can speak for us all, the Keswick Mountain Festival was a great event, it also includes Cycling, Swimming & Triathlon competitions as well as a variety of excellent speakers, concert performers, stalls & of course pubs! We all enthusiastically agreed, lets come back next year with a bigger & stronger team.

Isle of Jura Fell Race

Two Eryri runners completed the gruelling Isle of Jura Race on the 29th of May in a very competitive field and a counter in the Scottish champs. Chris Near finished in 43rd place at 4:11:20 followed by Adrian Williams in 48th place at 4:15:01. Well done to both of them!

Ras y Gader

Eleven club members raced at the weekend’s Cader Idris Race.  Heavy rain the day before and on the morning of the race left a very wet course, with rivers flowing on some of the paths it was slippy conditions all round.

At the summit Richard Roberts was leading for the club in third position, with 11 seconds between him and the second placed runner, but he managed to catch him and claim second overall by half a minute, an excellent result.

In the ladies a strong climb by Miranda Grant and a steady descent held onto her second place all the way to claim the same position.
Owen Roberts was 1st under 23 and an amazing 5th overall, surely one to be top three in the future.

Martin Cliffe took the first v40 slot.

Despite all 300 places being sold out in advance only 233 finished on the day.  The full list of Eryri members are below.
