CAERNARFON BORDER LEAGUE RACE REPORT Sunday 9th October 2016

The first race of the Borders Road Running League 2016/17 season brought a record number of competitors to Caernarfon (318) to race on the 10km course along the Foryd on a glorious sunny day for the scenic route with very little wind. The Eryri Harriers made very good use of “Home” advantage with both their men’s and women’s teams winning their respective 2nd Division’s, the men by a 10 point margin and the women by 14 points. There were 17 Eryri Harriers competing led home by 11th placed Dewi Owen 35:39 followed by: 14th John Rowley 36:12. 41st Matt Fortes 37:51. 56th Steffan Williams 38:36. 74th Ali Chant 39:49. 96th (3rd MV/55) Arwel Lewis 41:00. 124th Gary Porter Jones 42:36. 145th Ashley Wager 43:44. 152nd (19th Female) Megan Hughes 44:01. 153rd Steffan Evans 44:07. 171st (25th Female) Helen Blair 45:10. 188th (31st Female) Becki Law 46.05. 197th (2nd MV/65) Malcolm Jones 46:35. 226th (1st MV/70) Emyr Davies 48:18. 255th Peter Lewis 49:47. 272nd (3rd MV/70) Don Williams 51:46 and 295th Alison Donnelly 55:31. The race was won by Phil Robertson 33:38 with the first female being Sarah Kearney in 65th place overall in a time of 39:12. Both members of the Wirral Athletics Club.

RAS 30K PEDWRA LLYN/4 LAKES 30K RACE REPORT

In glorious sunny weather with very little wind 35 runners set off on the scenic 4 Lakes race route encompassing the Snowdonia National Park, Eryri’s Dewi Owen made his intentions clear from the start as he led from start to finish despite the initial close intentions of Menai T&F athlete Shane Williams, Dewi was able to maintain a narrow lead to begin with before pulling away in the 2nd half of the race to win by a clear margin in a time of 2:05:42 with Shane runner-up 2:08:24 and 3rd Mark Davies (NWRRC) 2:09:03.
Even more impressive was the first female finisher in 7th place overall was Eryri’s Miranda Grant who finished in a time of 2:16:51, just 35 seconds off the women’s course record! Also running very well was the 2nd female finisher, Jennifer Charlton (Eryri Harriers- FV/40) with a time of 2:25:39 and 3rd female Emma Collins (Denbigh Harriers – FV/50) 2:30:58.
Thank You to Mountain Rangers Sports & Social Club for hosting the event once again, St John Ambulance for their medical support and everyone who helped out with marshalling duties on the day.

Week-end of Runing in Snowdonia

Winners of the recent ‘Triple’ – Week-end of Runing in Snowdonia (Elidir, Gladstone 9 & Caernarfon 10K) were Gary Porter Jones & Emily Wood, who had the fastest M & F combined times. V well done to both!  They will each be receiving one of the new Eryri Harriers Cycling tops, which will be available for purchase @ £32 from the ‘shop’ tab as soon as they have arrived.

Abersoch Half Marathon

Russell Bentley won the Abersoch Half Marathon on Saturday 25th September in a time of 73:24 two minutes and 18 seconds clear of the 2nd placed athlete!
There were 248 finishers

Sunday 11th September Eryri on the Roads:

Three notable Eryri performances on the roads on Sunday spread around the country:
At the Great North Run, Brendan Rothery finished the iconic Half Marathon event in a time of 74:36.
In the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon, Richard Roberts finished 5th overall in a time of 72:19 while down in Cardiff, Russell Bentley representing North Wales in the Welsh 10k Inter Regional Championships finished 15th in a time of 31:50.

Caernarfon 10k race results & report

Considering all the various events that were going on over the weekend, there was a healthy turnout of 160 athletes for the annual Caernarfon 10k on Sunday 4th September with the event yet again hosting the North Wales 10km Championships ensuring good quality racing. This year’s race was run in a clockwise direction to enable the runners to have what wind there was on their backs for the final 4k section along the scenic Aberforeshore with the Menai Straits to the runners left and the Castle and Coed Helen playing fields finishing line getting closer with every step! Running the event in a clockwise direction also ensured that all the slightly uphill sections were over by 3½km’s ensuring a fast second half of the race.

The race was started by Welsh Athletics Road Running Secretary Paul Brooks and from the off a group of four; Daniel Kashi (Sale Harriers), Gethin Jones (Cybi Striders), Steffan Sayer (Menai T&F) and Gary Wyn Davies (Aberystwyth University) were the early pacesetters before Gary Davies dropped off the pace and that was the way it remained until Daniel Kashi made the decisive move to pull clear before the Aberforeshore just keeping ahead of Gethin Jones to win the North Wales 10k title in a time of 33:23 with Gethin runner-up in 33:27 and Steffan Sayer 3rd in 33:47. Gary Wyn Davies had to be content with 4th place in a time of 35:43. CAERNARFON to PLAS MENAI 5K – RACE REPORT

 

There was a thrilling finish to the race between Tom Roberts (Meirionydd) and Owen Roberts (Eryri) as they both came running over the brow of the hill down to the finish together with Tom just having that little bit extra to pip Owen to the line to win the inaugural event in a time of 16:13 with Owen clocking 16:14 with Ryan Cain (Menai T&F) not far behind in 16:22. The first female finisher in 25th place overall was Gemma Moore (North Wales Road Runners) 19:47 followed by Under 16 Menai athlete Samia Jones 20:33 and 3rd another under 16 Menai athlete Georgia Parkinson 20:50. In all of the 116 finishers there were 16 Eryri Harriers competing, notably: 6th Paul Wathan 16:49. 8th Dewi Owen 17:27. 10th Brian Wills 18:16. Eryri Category winners: MV/50 Noel Craine 18:49. MV/55 Arwel Lewis 19:51. FV/40 Megan Hughes 20:42. FV/50 Ali Thomas 23:22 & FV/65 Maggie Oliver 27:28.

Overall, a very good event, and one to do again next year.

CONWY PARKRUN

Paul Wathan kept up his impressive record in the Conwy Parkrun with his 17th win in the event on Saturday 20th August in a time of 17:56 over two minutes clear of the 2nd placed runner! There were 162 finishers on a very windy day!
