Club Presentation Evening

8th March 2014

Nearly sixty members attended the annual club presentation of awards and social evening, held this year on March 8th at the Caban, Brynrefail. The excellent and prolific buffet was followed by a choice of desserts and accompanied by an interesting slide show from Al Tye and Pete Douglas` archives. Especially amusing was the video of runners fording and falling into a river at the end of a race over in Penmachno in 2005! It was good to see our guest of honour, Al Tye, on his first social occasion since he suffered a stroke. Al also agreed very kindly to present the awards.

Before the awards, we were treated to a short presentation by club member Chris Near about the incredible 10 day team adventure race he took part in last year in Patagonia. His team won by an amazing 35 hours of almost continuous running, biking, kayaking, glacier walking and jungle bashing!

Paul Jenkinson then took us through the awards, starting with road running;

1st Brendan Rothery, 2nd Dewi Owen, 3rd Jordan Evans, followed by cross country;

1st Arwel Lewis, 2nd Craig Jones, 3rd Steve (Llan) Jones and 1st lady Andrea Rowlands, 2nd Bronwen Jenkinson, 3rd Sandra Rowlands.

The mountain running awards; 1st Matt Fortes, 2nd John Parkinson (V40), 3rd Martin Cliffe (V40) with Craig Jones then winning the V40 category, Jeremy Williams the V50, Brian Robbins the V60 and Emyr Davies the V70.

The 1st lady (and 1st V50!) was Ellie Salisbury, 2nd (and 1st V40) Emily Wood and 3rd Andrea Rowlands with Maggie Oliver winning the V60 category.

The Outstanding Athlete award went to a young athlete Nathan Jones who in his first hectic few months with club ran twice for GB. There were other very strong contenders for this award in Rob Samuel, Matt Roberts and Alun Vaughan.

The Angela Brand Barker award for the most improved female went deservedly to Bronwen Jenkinson, who did so well in the Tuesday Evening Series and also represented Wales in junior mountain running.

The `Outstanding contribution to the club` shield went to husband and wife team, Craig and Louise Jones, for their tireless work in the organisation of the British Hill Relay.

Mair Tomos presented the Dewi Tomos Junior Award to Mabon Llyr, who really impressed in the Midweek Series.

All award winners received a beautiful hand engraved slate mat. Our thanks go to Ellie Salisbury for arranging the slate trophies and the very successful evening.
