COLWYN BAY Football Club have this week received the go ahead from the council to stage a Gary Speed Memorial 10K run in the town on World Cup Final day.
The former Wales international and manager’s father, Roger, is Patron of the Seagulls and he and his wife Carol have given their permission for the event to be held in memory of their late son who made his name playing  with Everton, Leeds and Newcastle United.
The 10k run will start and finish at Colwyn Bay’s Llanelian Road ground on Sunday July 13 ,taking in Eirias Park, the promenade and Marine Drive through Rhos-on-Sea.
Entrance fee for the run will be £10  and runners will also be invited to raise money for charities through sponsorship.
Strathmore Water, official suppliers for the Commonwealth Games, have  already agreed to be involved.
Author and comedian John Martin, who is vice-President of Colwyn Bay FC and a close friend of the Speed family commented: “From the initial reaction I’ve had It promises to be huge and could well  become an annual event in the town as a tribute to a great North Wales sports star
“The plan is for this year’s event to be part of a full weekend of activities at the football club to coincide with the World Cup final.”
The 10K run will be open for all interested parties not just serious runners, who wish to help remember Gary Speed and also help good causes.
John Martin added: “Runners will be encouraged to raise money by sponsorship for charities as Gary was a great supporter of charitable events.”
