Snowdon Uphill Trial Race Report - 17th August 2008

Report by Arwel Lewis

Richard Roberts racing the Snowdon Uphill Trial Race 2008 - Photo by Paul HowarthThere was a good turnout for World Trophy Uphill Only Trial Race at Llanberis on Sunday 17th August. Despite a delay because of a road traffic accident by Gallt Y Glyn, and the early adverse weather, there was excellent competition all round, in the Senior Men's race Steve Vernon won in a very good time of 52:40, with the 1st Welshman Tim Davies 9th in 56:28. 1st Eryri Harrier was Richard Roberts 19th in 58:50 with Rob Samuel 32nd 62:02, 42nd James McQueen 71:13 and Paul Jenlinson 44th in 72:38.

In the combined Senior Women/Junior Men's race which was won by Helm Hill's Tom Addison in 45:12, New Zealander Anna Frost was 3rd overall, 1st female in an excellent time of 45:46, Ricky Challinor had a very good run to to finish 2nd (1st Welsh) in 45:40 with Eryri's Paul Wathan 13th in 49:58, Jackie Lee was the 1st Welsh female in 54:18 with Andrea Roberts still suffering the effects of a knee injury picked up at Borrowdale 13th female in 56:50, Gemma Morgans completed the Junior Womens race in 33:26.

Thank you to everyone who helped on the day

Brecon Beacons - 16th August 2008

Report by Iain Ridgway

In the penultimate round of the WFRA Welsh Champs a small field ran the Brecon Beacons Fell Race in quite atrocious conditions. 19 miles, with only 4500ft of ascent it's basically a fast runnable hilly trail race, but in the thick cloud, strong winds and heavy rain there's enough open moorland sections to end up very lost. I was Eryri's only runner, coming 4th in 3:02. Mark Palmer won, just ahead of Mercia's Pete Vale in around 3:46, with Rob Gordon 3rd. An enjoyable race, quite different to the usual longs like the Peris.

Borrowdale - 2nd August 2008

Report by Iain Ridgway

In the penultimate round of the British Champs the woman yet again secured good points with 3rd overall with all to play for with one round to go. Sarah Ridgway led the woman home, coming 7th in 3:43, Andrea Roberts was the 2nd counter in 3:59 and Ruth Metcalf 3rd counter in 4:18. Hannah Toberman (4:19), Ali Thomas (5:02) also ran. In the Blokes race I was 18th overall in 3:14, Noel Craine 92nd in 3:42, Arwel Lewis 175th in 4:07 after injuring himself tying his shoe laces too tight, and Mike Blake finished in 4:26. In a run of bad luck and injuries James McQueen, Trefor Jones, Jenny Hemming and Jackie Lee did not finish. Conditions were fairly good, wet rock and thick cloud meant many runners lost time and got lost, but with plenty of water on the course and cool temperatures it was otherwise good running conditions.

Eryri flying in the Snowdon heat - 26th July 2008

Report by Arwel

Matthew Roberts racing for Wales in Ras Y Wyddfa - Photo by Paul HowarthThe Spanish certainly brought the weather with them for the 33rd running of the Snowdon race on Saturday 26th July, where the hot conditions affected a number of runners, notably Matthew Roberts, who unfortunately ended the race being airlifted to hospital suffering from dehydration, though he has made a quick recovery and is raring to go again, though not up Snowdon!!

With the race conditions as they were, most of the runners finishing times were slower than expected. Notable Eryri times/placings were: Richard Roberts was the first EryriWelsh member to finish, 15th in 1:15:19 with Iain Ridgway (on his Welsh debut) 27th 1:20:03, Scott Butterworth had a good run to finish 39th in 1:23:42, Arwel Lewis 49th 1:25:46, Iwan Edgar 58th (1st V/50) 1:27:36, Sarah Ridgway (on her Welsh debut) 65th (8th Fem) in 1:28:49, 83rd (9th Fem) Jenny Hemming 1:31:43, Andrea Roberts 88th (10th Fem) in 1:32:39, both Jenny and Andrea were also representing Wales, and Dafydd Whiteside Thomas 149th (2nd V/60) 1:39:56. Richard Roberts racing Snowdon International Race 2008

Richard Roberts can be pleased with being the 5th fastest on the descent in 25:08, with Iain Ridgway 7th in 25:40, while Sarah Ridgway was the third fastest female on the descent with a time of 28:56, the Ridgway's also celebrated a double success with the first local male/female prizes.

Wet Siabod in more ways than one - 19th July 2008

Report by Arwel

Iain Ridgway racing Moel SiabodConditions at the Moel Siabod race on Saturday 19th July were wet enough without the river crossing at the finish! which made the course very slippery in places.

From the off, Tim Davies led the way to the summit pursued by Matt Gilbert and Iain Ridgway, which is how things stayed to the finish, Tim winning in 52:07 followed by Matt in 52:54 and Iain 53:09. (Both Matt and Iain saving themselves for the Snowdon race, I hope!!).

Paul Jenkinson had a good run to finish 8th (2nd Vet/40)58:17 (see photos here of Paul being chased down at the river but emerging triumphant after a very entertaining dunking by his chaser...)

Other notable Eryri award winners were: Iwan Edgar 14th (2nd MV/50)60:17.

Andrea Roberts 19th (2nd Female) 61:36. Jenny Hemming 20th (3rd Female)62:11. Don Williams 29th (1st MV/60)63:58. Dafydd Whiteside 32nd (2nd MV/60)65:15. Annie Williams 53rd (3rd FV40)73:05. There were 78 finishers. In the Junior race: 1st (1st U/16) Calum Muskett 13:36. 3rd (1stU/14) Owain James 14:08 with Branwen Jenkinson 1st FU/12 16:50 and Elin James 1st FU/14 18:14.

Jackie and Janet set new Wasdale record - 12th July 2008

Guest report by Lloyd Taggart

Perfect high cloud, clear tops, and cool temperatures greeted the 150 runners on the start line for Wasdale.

2007 English and British Champion Janet McIver was looking to complete her tally of Long Lakeland Classic records by adding Wasdale, and along with record holder, Eryri's Jackie Lee and Helene Whittaker, also a previous record holder, it looked set to be an exciting womens race.

At the first checkpoint Mercias Pete Vale had set an early lead, determined to put enough space between himself and the next runners after being outsprinted at the finish last year.
He succeeded and finished in 3hrs 51mins 07 secs, and congratulations on a well deserved win.
MDCs evergreen V40 Mark Palmer finished in 3-54-59, followed Ben Abdelnoor in 3-59-24, with Dark Peak taking the team prize with Janet as an amazing 3rd counter.

By CP1 Whin Rigg, Janet was in a leading group, 1 min ahead of Jackie, with Helene being forced to drop out.

Climbing Seatallan, about an hour into the race, Jackie caught Janet, and from here to half way up Scafell it was a game of cat and mouse with each trying to out run the other without success.

Eventually the exasperated ladies declared a truce, but the spectators unaware of the pact held their breath (well Lloyd did anyway) as they raced down Lingmell nose sprinting to the line with seconds between them, and crossing together in an incredible 4hrs 12mins 7secs, 7th place, and 7 minutes quicker than Jackies 2006 record.

Coming soon -

Keep an eye out in the next newsletter for what really happened during those arduous 4hrs12mins7secs in Jackie's account of the race... not to be missed

Double Triumph For Eryri As Andrea Smashes Course Record - 12th July 2008

Report by Arwel Lewis

At the Tal Y Fan 8mile/2400ft fell race on Saturday 12th July, Eryri's Andrea Roberts was well inside the old course record of 82:07 in winning the female category with a time of 79:35, followed by Jenny Hemming, who was also inside the old course record with a time of 81:53, 3rd was Ruth Partridge (Sale) 83:32 and 1st Female Vet was Heather MacArthur (Colwyn Bay) 93:25.

Iain Ridgway made the most of Stanley Charles and Rob Samuels unfortunate course detour! to win in a time of 72:57 closely followed by Abergele's Justin Mcllveen 73:04 with Southport's Rob Ashworth 3rd (1st Vet/40) in 73:54 and Arwel Lewis 4th (2nd Vet/40) in 74:02, James McQueen collected the 3rd senior male prize with a time of 74:45, while 3rd Vet/40 was Russell Owen 76:10.

Other prize winners were: 1st vet/50 Barrie Wells (NWRRC) 80:21, 2nd vet/50 Jeremy Williams 84:32, 3rd vet/50 Ian Rothery (Cybi) 85:31 and 1st vet/60 William Hartwell U/A 86:11.

Eryri's French Adventure - 5-6th July 2008

Report by Arwel Lewis

Trail du Bout du MondeWell the French certainly do things differently. In Wales, due to bad weather, our mountain races are usually shortened for safety reasons, not in France it seems! Due to the strong winds and blustery showers, the finish of the 35km Trail du Bout du Monde had to be moved for safety reasons, a further 4.5km back! to make it 39.5kms. Just one problem though... myself and Richard Roberts were not aware of this and when we approached what we thought was the finishing line, well you can imagine how we felt! Then we had to contend with not knowing how much further we had to go, with no sign of the finishing area for miles! Sacre Bleu!!

Richard Roberts Trail du Bout du MondeWell we got there in the end, with Richard having a tremendous run, mixing it with the big boys of international trail running and only missing out on sixth place in the closing stages to finish seventh in a very good time of 2hrs 59min 15sec. I then stumbled in, finishing 33rd (4th Vet) in 3hrs 22min 27sec with Dylan Owen 89th in 3hrs 44min 54sec and Alwyn Oliver 178th (1st Vet 60) in 4hrs 10min 39sec. There were 404 die hard finishers.

The sensible ones ran in the 15km trail race, with Paul Wathan doing extremely well to finish 8th (1st Under 20) in 57:28, while Anna Bartlett just missed out in the closing stages on winning the ladies category, finishing 2nd in 63:20. Considering Anna has not been running much lately due to a back injury, a great effort. Phil Tan decided not to take part in the Tour de France after his recent cycling mishap and did well to finish 138th in 74:07, without colliding with any walls!! Gemma Morgans again showed her potential to win the under 20 category finishing 217th in 79:06 while Sheila Lloyd won the Female Vet 60 category finishing 402nd in 1:59:15. Overall a great insight into international trail running.

Glaramara Fell Race - 29th June 2008

Report by Sarah Ridgway

Keen to recce some of the Lakes races (and already sort of in the area after racing Blackstone Edge the previous day) Iain, Noel and Sarah determined that the only way to get rid of a hangover (product of a friends engagement party in Sheffield) was to do a race.

Glaramara Race starts from and finishes at the Glaramara Outdoor Centre in Borrowdale and is 5 miles long and includes 2100 feet of climbing. While the race is a lovely burst up to the summit and 'best-line'-finding-fun on the descent (why, oh why, did I ignore the advice to stay to the right of the path on the decent????), it is Barry's flapjack at the finnish that is the highlight of the day.

Iain had a strong run to come in 5th in 54m30s, Noel was 10th in 59m20s and Sarah was 15th in 61m33s.

Bog Call for Ridgway in Rochdale Bog Championships

Report by Matthew Roberts

Arwel Lewis chasing down the competition - Photo by Sarah Ridgway

The Eryri British championships stalwarts travelled up to Blackstone Edge near Rochdale on the weekend for race 4 in the series. The race was a classic short, 3.5 miles with a mere 1200ft of climbing.

Talk beforehand was of the classic Blackstone Edge bog, with 3 days of heavy rain beforehand and with over 250 runners stomping through the bog it was made even more interesting. The ladies race went off first with the race organiser warning of the "bog of hell"!. The race was led from start to finish by fell Queen Angela Mudge who romped home in 32.28mins. The Eryri ladies team, fighting to regain the championships had a strong field of 9 runners - lead home by Jackie Lee in an impressive 9th place in 34.58, closely followed by Sarak Kleeman-Ridgway-Kleeman on the comeback trail in a strong 14th in 35.58, Andrea Roberts 20th in 36.38, Jenny Hemming 21st in 36.59, newly purchased via Blake Becky Law36th in 39.51, Wendy Trimble 63rd in 45.25, Alison Donnelly 72nd in 47.30, Maggie Oliver 75th and 3rd vet60 in 48.31 and Rhian Jones 76th in 48.46. Unsure of the ladies team position but with this showing it's sure to be top 3. There were 84 finishers.

With a 191 finishers the mens race was always going to be a manic start as the wide road soon fileterd into a narrow footpath, a certain Scotsman wasnt too happy!. Despite having over 100 male club members only 7 dared make the short journey out of Wales! The race was won by Brit champ in waiting again Rob Hope in 27.09, well outside of ex Eryri legend Colin Donnelly's course record set way back in 1988. The club were lead home by fell king Richard Roberts in 24th in 29.38, followed by Math Roberts in 50th in 31.38, Iain Ridgway (who following some time spent on a submarine is still suffering from stomach problems and required the loo for the most part of the race so a good effort) 60th in 32.13, Arwel Lewis 95th in 34.24, Noel Craine 103rd in 34.55, Richard Borne 156th in 38.15 and Mike Blake 165th in 40.16.

Next stop in the series is the classic Borrowdale a week after Wyddfa.

Sialens y Barcud Coch - 21st June 2008

Report by Dylan Owen

Eight Eryri members made a successful journey on Saturday to Bwlch Nant yr Arian, near Aberystwyth, to run this tough 12 mile multi-terrain race.

The course takes you mostly along forest and moorland tracks through some superb scenery. There was a good turnout from far and wide for the race, which includes the UK, Welsh senior and Masters Trail Running Championships.

Matt Collins of Cardiff was the eventual winner, after some earlier pressure from Iwan Morton, who finished 5th in 1.20.30. Anna Frost of Wrexham/NZ easily won the Ladies race with a superb run to finish 4th overall. Eryri took the Team Prize with Dylan Owen 10th/1.27.22 and Don Williams 17th/1.30.12 supporting Iwan's efforts. Don Williams also won the V65 category. Other Eryri placings and times include; Maldwyn Evans 40th/1.43.01, Merfyn Williams 43rd/1.43.28, Clive King 47th/1.44.38 and Dilwyn Rowlands 48th/1.45.18 ( Emyr Davies unfortunately had to retire with a calf injury ).

Overall this is an excellent race, well worth travelling to. There is also the additional option of the 18mile Ras Y Diafol, from nearby Devil's Bridge the next day, for those who want to make it a proper weekend of running.

Welsh 1000m Peaks Race - 7th June 2008

The Welsh 1000 Metre Peaks Race is pretty gruelling - 22 miles long with 8000 feet of ascent - starting from Aber and finishing on the summit of Snowdon. There was a good turnout as the race was a counter in the Welsh Fell Runners Association Open / Welsh Championships and North Wales Series.

The dry, overcast conditions favoured the runners - however the mist on the Carneddau made navigation challenging between the Beras and Carnedd Llewellyn.

Photo of Jackie Lee racing 1000m Peaks by Sarah RidgwayColin Donnelly of Cambuslang won the race in a time of 3 hours 48 minutes (also 1st over 40) - the 10th time he has raced - and won - the event!

Tim Davies of Mercia was 2nd in 3.55.31 and Iain Ridgway of Eryri 3rd in 3.56.40. Iwan Edgar of Eryri won the over 50 category in 5.02.34 and first over 60 was Don Williams of Eryri in 5.10.14. The ladies race was won by Jackie Lee of Eryri in 4.23.20. Andrea Roberts of Eryri was 2nd in 4.42.57 and Nicky Spinks of Penistone 3rd in 5.03.09 (also 1st over 40). The over 60 category was won by Maggie Oliver of Eryri in 6.43.27.

The short race from Ogwen to Snowdon was won by Russell Owen of Eryri in 1.48.56 (also 1st over 40). Trefor Jones of Mercia was 2nd in 1.51.52 and Sam Smith of Eryri 3rd in 1.52.53. First over 50 was Jim Bennell of Eryri in 2.04.18. The ladies race was won by Stel Farrar of Eryri in 2.37.39 (also 1st over 40).

Many thanks to Paul Howarth who provided exceptional support to the runners at Ogwen and Pen Y Pass, and Mike who was handing out water at the fingerstone.

It was hot, sunny and clear on the summits during the 'Sinclair Steel' Carneddau Race that took place from Bethesda on Saturday 31st May.

Stan Charles of Clwydian was first to the summit of Carnedd Dafydd and maintained his lead to Yr Elen, however was passed by Iain Ridgway of Eryri who, continuing his strong descent, went on to win by a margin of nearly 5 minutes.

Photo of Iain Ridgway racing Carneddau by Alastair TyeThe race was won by Iain Ridgway of Eryri in a time of 1 hour 41 minutes and 45 seconds. Stan Charles of Clwydian was 2nd in 1.46.28 and James McQueen of Eryri 3rd in 1.48.41.

Isle of Jura fell race, 24th May 2008

Report by Iain

6 Eryri Runners travelled up for the Isle of Jura fell race this Saturday.

16 miles long and 7500ft of ascent it is a similar undertaking to the Pedol Peris. Fast runnable terrain early on is soon replaced by steep rough ground covered in large unstable scree as the route traverses the famous Paps of Jura. If that was not enough the race finishes with 3.3 miles of flat tarmac back along the coastline to the Jura Whisky distillery.

In good clear conditions all Eryri runners who had done this race before ran PB's. In a very strong field Chris Near recovered from his Paddy Buckley Round to have a great run and come 8th in 3:40:57, his first Jura sub 4, while Iain Ridgway finished 90 seconds and one place behind in 9th in 3:42:25. Hannah Toberman racing in Dura - Photo Sarah RidgwayDespite having good runs both were still "mudged" as Angela Mudge had a superb run winning the women's race, finishing 7th overall, and breaking her existing record with a time of 3:40:33.

Rob Jebb had a stormer to win overall in 3:07:49, missing out on the record by 50 seconds. Ian Holmes was runner up in 3:15:23, beating Jethro Lennox by 4 seconds in a sprint finish.

Noel Craine knocked almost 45 minutes of his previous PB for the course to finish in a state of exhaustion (looking even worse than he did after last years Peris!), agonisingly close to the 4 hr mark in 4:00:45, 28th overall.

Sub 4 hr finishes are awarded an engraved crystal whiskey glass, so for one more year Noel's whisky won't taste quite as good as it could.

Hannah Toberman battled with the terrain to have a strong run finishing 86th in 4:53:05, while Ali Thomas continued with her good run of form finishing 106th, 3rd Ladies V40, in 5:09:54 and Pilar Near knocked half an hour off her Jura PB to come 110th in 5:12:07.

Jura is a fantastic race and definitely one to be recommended.

Richard's Cader Double, 24th May 2008

Report by Arwel

Eryri's Richard Roberts retained his Cader Idris race title, following up last years win by holding off a strong challenge from Brothers Andy and Tim Davies (Mercia) to win in 1:25:19, a minute and two seconds quicker than last year.

On a warm sunny afternoon in Dolgellau on Saturday 24th May, Andy Davies reached the Cader summit in the lead, but Richard Roberts overtook him on the steep descent to win quite comfortably in the end, with Andy Davies 2nd in 1:25:19 and Tim Davies 3rd in 1:28:05.

Nick Comes of Age - Moel Eilio Race, 17th May 2008

Report by Arwel

Having just turned twenty recently, Bangor University student Nick Swinburn, who has already proved to be a class above everyone else in the Tuesday evening series, and running for his club Northumberland FR, showed what an outstanding prospect he is by beating the cream of British mountain running at the Moel Eilio 8mile/300feet race on Saturday 17th May. Nick won the race in a time of 59:01, 35 seconds off the course record, though he did take the wrong route down from Moel Cynghorion to the Maesgwm path, which cost him some time.

Foel Lus - 15th April 2008

report by Matthew Roberts

Iain Ridgway descending during the Foel Lus Race

A stunning night greeted the runners on this second of the Tuesday night races.

As most of the "big guns" of Eryri had missed Llantysilio fireworks were expected........it must have rained then?

Once again British under 23 athlete Nick Swinburn of Northumberland Fell Runners (ran for team GB in 2007 Euro Mountain running champs) stormed to victory in a superb time of 21.50 (CD ran 23.06 when winning here in 2005), Rich Roberts' feet were melting by the time he got to the finish line behind Nick in 2nd place (22.38), Math Roberts followed in 3rd (23.15). Local man (very local, i.e. 100m's from start) Chris Near had a good run to finish 4th (24.19).

First vet 40 in the men went to Abergele Harriers club captain and new fell master Geran Hughes (25.07), with Paul "short cut" Jenkinson romping home in 2nd (26.23) and Noel Craine jogging in in 3rd (27.06). First vet 50 for the men was Eilir Evans in 27.36 with Eryri road running legend Emyr Davies first vet 60 in 29.59. Gethin Edwards ran well to get first in the under 19/18 category - he came a strong 8th overall (25.15) whilst young guns Calumn Muskett and Tom Budesha continued their destruction of most of the seniors to get 12th and 13th overall (26.48 and 26.54).

In the ladies a superb race was had with Eryri club champ Andrea Roberts nicking Jenny Hemming by a mere second (27.44 and 27.45). At the summit Andrea was well ahead but Jenny stormed back on the descent. Once again Bangor Uni student Becky Law had a good run to finish 3rd in 28.33 (must of been training with her boyfriend, Rob, who ran 2.40 in London!). Ellie Salisbury came 1st vet 40 in 32.22 with club stalwart Maggie Oliver once again 1st vet 50/60 in 34.02.

Back to the superb village of Fron next week for Mynydd Mawr, aka Elephant Mountain...........the first proper "fell" run of the series - look out Bangor Uni!?!?

Ras Moel Tryfan Dash (3miles, 500ft) - 8th April 2008

report by Matthew Roberts

As if there isn't enough weekend races at this time of year here comes eight cracking tuesday evening races, the first four in consecutive weeks, superb!!

Ras Moel Tryfan DashThe first on tuesday eve was a new route up Moel Tryfan (used to be a race up there in the 80's and 90's but from Rhosgadfan).

With most of the Eryri regulars struggling after their 7000ft of climbing over in Ireland on the weekend it was left to the youth of Bangor University to lead the way - though needing some navigation support coming off the summit from the local chaplain.

Nick Swinburn (Bangor Uni / NFR) took the glory closely followed by Rob Samuel (Bangor Uni), Francis Blunt (Bangor Uni / NFR) snatched 3rd from local Math Roberts (Eryri). An incredible sprint finish up the incline gave newboy John Willacy (U/A) first in the vet 40's (now a hotly contested age category, look out in Foel Lus!) as well as a photofinish victory over Abergele Harriers fell master Justin Mcilveen.

First vet 50's was Phil Tan Jones with local master Emyr Davies snatching first vet 60's. Calum Muskett of Menai TaF had a menacing run, destroying most of the senior men to snatch a superb 9th place overall!

A punishing and strong run in Ireland on Saturday didnt stop Eryri strongwomen Andrea Roberts winning again, closely followed by Bangor Uni's Becky Law. The in-form Ali Thomas - stacked up on cake after the weekend - had a strong run to finish 3rd overall and 1st vet 40's, while the female vet 60 British champ winner in Ireland Maggie Oliver took the vet 50/60 1st.

In the juniors full marks go to Sarah Livett for listening to race directions at the start, she got 1st overall, with Rhys James in 2nd and John Spill in 3rd.......half marks to those who went the wrong way, realised and turned back and no marks to those that didnt turn back!!

Roll on Foel Lus!!

Defending their team title the women started off well with 3rd place with Andrea Roberts (12th), Ruth Metcalfe (17th) and Jenny Hemming (18th) being the counters.

Matthew Roberts descending during the Pen Cerrig-calch raceThis year the race was the first counter in the Welsh Fell Runners Association Open / Welsh Championships and South Wales Series.

The race was won by Harry Mathews of Mynydd Du in a time of 15:38, Mathew Collins of MDC was 2nd in 15:53 and Patrick Wooddisse of MDC 3rd in 16:16, Eryri's Math Roberts was 4th in 16:27, Iain Ridgway 7th in 17:10. First over 60 was Don Williams of Eryri in 18.57 (20th overall).

Ras Yr Aran - 22nd March 2008

Adverse weather, in the form of gale force winds and ice, led to the race being shortened - but the 116 runners that set off from Llanuwchllyn for the Easter finale of the Meirionnydd Winter Series weren't complaining, it was that cold!!

Tim Davies of Mercia pipped Richard Roberts of Eryri by a mere second to win the race while Matthew Roberts just missed out on winning the series, despite beating Steve Gilliland whose position on the day was enough to secure him his first victory in the 3 race series.

The ladies race was won by Helen Fines of Calder Valley while Sarah Ridgway held on for victory in the series.

Moel Wnion - Richard's Back on Form - 15th March 2008

After an injury lay off and a cautious return to running, Richard Roberts returned to winning ways at the Moel Wnion fell race on Saturday 15th March, leading from start to finish ahead of Mercia's Roland Stafford who outpaced Matthew Roberts on the steep downhill to the finish with Harry Matthews (Mynydd Du) close behind just ahead of Ian Houston (Mercia).

The ladies race was won impressively Anna Frost (Wrexham). Eryri's Andrea Roberts finished 3rd overall (1st Welsh Lady) with Jenny Hemming 2nd Welsh Lady. The race was not only the first in the Welsh Athletics Mountain Running Championships but also the trial race for the Knockdhu International event on 26th April 2008. Both Andrea and Jenny along with Richard and Roland Stafford are automatically selected for the Welsh team. Congratulations to them all.

Despite the windy conditions there was a good turnout of 89 runners for the race.

Rob Greenwood

Moel Y Ci Race - 23rd Feb 2008

Report by Jeremy Williams

Enjoyment on last year’s new route and the reputation of “Bill’s soup” brought 87 runners to the Moelyci Environmental Centre this year.

The route rises up through fields at the Centre, circles and climbs with a long testing ‘green lane’ and a final pull up through heather and peat to Moelyci summit at 1300 feet. If runners can raise their heads before the plunging descent, there are views to the Anglesey coast, Snowdon, the Glyders and the Carneddau.

Congratulations to Rob Greenwood of Eryri who set the new course record of 36.58, passing first-to-the-top Stanley Charles (2nd at 37.14) on the first steep descent off the summit. Rob uses Moel y Ci for night training and claims that it seems “so much faster in daylight”! Third home was last year’s winner Richard Roberts in 38.22.

Kate Bailey raced home as 1st woman in 45.20 and 19th overall followed by Jenny Heming at 46.21. Ali Thomas had a great run-in as 1st FV40 at 52.39 with Annie Williams a half-second behind. Maggie Oliver was 1st FV50/60 at 57.23, Gary Williams 1st MV40 at 39.32 and 6th overall, Iwan Edgar 1st MV50 at 43.31 and Don Williams 1st MV60 at 46.30 took the other class prizes.

The junior race winner was Calum Porter-Jones in 11.09 with Maisie Bye 2nd and first girl at 11.25. Eight juniors ran.

Projects at the Moelyci Environmental Centre focus on sustainability, local produce and local crafts. In consequence, race prizes included bird and bat boxes and compost made on site. We are grateful to the new Majestic Wine store in Bangor for the bottle prizes, and to Sarah and the Body Shop for the beauty bags. The soup and cakes were from organic local suppliers accompanied by Fair Trade tea and coffee.

Our thanks to the Centre staff, marshals, ‘Team Dolly’ radio network and the registration and finish team.

Tarren Hendre Fell Race - 2nd Feb 2008

Despite the dissapointment by some over the lack of snow, a superb day was had by the 65 runners in Tarren Hendre race which scales the heights above Abergynolwyn. Mathew Roberts had a great run coming in second behind Steve Gilliland of Bro Dysynni, while Richard Roberts came in third in his first race after struggling with a wave of injuries. Paul Howarth had a great run finishing 8th overall and second O/40. Sarah Ridgway was first lady with Andrea Roberts coming in second lady, but the highlight of the day was seeing Maggie Oliver smashing local golden girl Brenda Jones O/60 record by a massive 16 minutes!!

Forward thinking - Splega Skyline - posted 19th January

The first of the British Championship races, Spelga Skyline (Ireland), is coming up soon and we need a good turn out for both the women's and men's teams - and if we can confirm numbers before the end of January a mini bus can be organised.

Situated in the beautiful Mourne Mountains, and based in Newcastle, there are plenty of options to make a great weekend out of the event - and if the post race party lives up to last years British Championship race, then be prepared for a good night.

Please contact Iain by email at iain.ridgway@bangor.ac.uk, phone: 01286 872641 or mobile: 07971314177 if you would like to go on the minibus - we need numbers by the end of the month for this to be organised so get in quick!
