Great Orme Challenge - 20th July 2008
Several Eryri members took on the hill session up the Great Orme Llandudno on Sunday 20th July with Richard Roberts giving Ricky Challinor a good race to the top, before Ricky pulled away on the last flattish bit to win in a good time for the course of 19:03, despite a strong headwind, with Richard 2nd in 19:16 followed by 3rd Brendan Rothery, with Paul Wathan and Iain Ridgway also making the top ten, Paul 1st Junior Male.

Castles Relay - 13-14th June 2008
Following a ten year absence, we finally took part in this fantastic event, and all twenty runners who turned out and completed a stage enjoyed a fabulous weekend of running from Caernarfon Castle to Cardiff Castle, 210 miles in all, with Gwyn Owen getting the club off to a brilliant start by winning the 1st stage from Caernarfon to Penygroes (9.1 Miles) in a new course record of 52:11, then Dylan Jones, who stepped in at the last moment and not having done much running lately, taking up the baton to finish 2nd on stage 2, Penygroes to Criccieth (10.7 Miles) in 62:12. Matthew Roberts took on the 3rd stage from Criccieth to Maentwrog which was also classed as the 1st mountain stage? Rather flat if you ask me! (12.1 Miles) finishing 18th in 1:18:55.
It was Dave Pryce turn next on stage 4: Maentwrog to Harlech Castle (9.4 Miles) doing well to finish 7th in 58:20. Stage 5: Harlech to Barmouth (9.6 Miles) Steve Livett 23rd 1:07:52. Stage 6: Barmouth to Dolgellau (10.7 Miles) Kelvin Jones with another top 10 finish, 9th in 65:28. Stage 7: Dolgellau to Dinas Mawddwy (2nd Mountain Stage 9.75 Miles) Iwan Morton 23rd in 63:48. Stage 8: Dinas Mawddwy to Foel (11.2 Miles) Richard Williams also making the top 10, 9th in 1:08:06. Stage 9: Foel to Llanfair Caereinion (8.6 Miles).
Our only female competitor Gemma Morgans, I told her it was a nice flat course for her! Forgot about the steep uphill climb to the finish!! Still she ran well until the hill! To finish 38th in 1:06:40, and to end the first day, taking on the longest stage of the relay Richard Roberts stage10: (13.3 Miles) from Llanfair Caereinion to Newtown which is also a mountain stage, and despite a stitch, Richard still did well to finish 5th in 1:17:38, which left the club well placed overall in 3rd place overnight, then it was a case of getting something to eat, or in the case of Iwan, Kelvin and Richard drink!! And settling down to try and get some sleep on the leisure centres hard floor!
Day two: An early 7am start to stage 11: Newtown to Llanbadarn Fynydd (12.3 Miles), another mountain stage, (more up than down)! I, (Arwel Lewis) decided to run this one, took me 8 miles to loosen up! and that was all up hill!! Finishing 14th in 1:18:54. Stage 12: Llanbadarn Fynydd to Crossgates (11.2 Miles) Tony Woodall, despite a calf injury, still managed a respectable 15th place in 1:10:48. Stage 13: Crossgates to Builth Wells (10.6 Miles) our oldest competitor Emyr Davies came up against Sonia O’Sullivan on this one, and had very good run to finish 17th in 1:07:10. Stage 14: Builth Wells to Drovers Arms (11 Miles) fair play to Paul Howarth on taking on this challenging mountain stage finishing 33rd in 1:18:35.
Stage 15: Drovers Arms to Brecon (12.8 Miles) 37th Ian Rothery 1:28:25. Stage 16: Brecon to Beacons Reservoir (8.8 Miles) Dylan Owen lost some time due to a fancy shoelace tie up, which obviously did not work!! Finished in 24th place with a time of; 60:45. Stage 17: Beacons Reservoir to Cyfarthfa Castle (9.2 Miles) Peter Lewis despite a sleepless night in the mini bus, (Peter complained about some kids playing around the car park during the night, Iwan, Kelvin and Richard Williams come to mind!!) he still did well to finish 20th in 1:00:49.
Stage 18: Rhyd y Car Centre to Abercynon (9.1 Miles) despite a marshalling problem (there weren’t any!!) our secret weapon on his debut for the club Christoph Gertler surprised everyone, including us, to finish 4th in 58:00. Stage 19: (Nearly there!) Navigation Park to Caerphilly Castle (10.4 Miles) Mervyn Williams found this one to be a bit of a struggle to finish 40th in 1:26:46. His comments were: (Next time I’ll be the Water boy!!) Finally Stage 20: Caerphilly Castle to Cardiff Castle (10.4 Miles) Paul Wathan led the team home and though he was disappointed to finish 17th in 1:08:22, he did have to wait a hell of a long time for his turn to run!
Overall the team finished 12th of the 58 teams competing in both the open and mountain events. All the stages were well supported by everyone involved, and a hugely enjoyable experience, the camaraderie was superb. Roll on next year, when hopefully we can make more of a challenge. Thank you to everyone who turned out and supported the club

Rhayader Round the Lakes 20 - 15 March 2008
Iain Ridgway and David Pryce travelled down to Rhayader for the classic 20 mile road race around the Elan valley. After an initial 2 small laps around the town centre it's a scenic rural route, involving a 1000ft climb up the valley, a steep descent and the remainder of the run is undulating as it passes a series of reservoirs, with a small sting in the tail just before you re-enter the town.
Iain had a strong run, despite a brief stop to tie up his shoelace at the 4 mile mark!!!, coming 11th in 2:11:09, while David came 132nd in 2:44:19 after suffering an 'upset stomach' (aka the shits) throughout the race. However, pleasingly his troublesome knee was not a problem, so there was a silver lining. 322 ran, the race was won in 2:03:34.
Alun's Back with a Win - 9th March 2008
Following a seven month lay off without a race, Alun Vaughan returned to winning ways in the Borders Road Running League Race at Mold on Sunday 9th March, in leading the men's team to an emphatic victory on the day to stretch their lead at the top of the first division to 289 points ahead of their nearest challengers Buckley with only the two races to go.
On the 5 mile undulating course Alun had a close battle with young challenger Ricky Challinor (Deeside) before securing victory by a two second margin in 25:53 followed by the consistent Brendan Rothery 4th in 26:53 with Richard Roberts returning from injury 5th in 27:00, then; 10th Matthew Roberts 27:29. 15th Iain Ridgway 27:52. 25th Paul Wathan 28:51. 28th Richard Williams 28:56. 34th Dave Pryce 29:06. 41st Kelvin Jones 29:37. 52nd Paul Howarth 30:15. 58th Tony Woodall 30:32. 62nd Arwel Lewis 30:38. 92nd (1st Vet60) Don Williams 32:10. 109th Ian Rothery 33:03. 138th Emyr Davies (another making a comeback after a long lay off due to injury) 34:41. 140th Mervyn Williams 34:46. 179th Ian Blakemore 38:05. 191st Iorwerth Roberts 39:02 208th Roy Jardine 40:58 and 221st Dave Beard 44:33.
Eryri's total of 215pts is also a record score in the Borders League for the men's team.
Eryri's ladies maintained their push for promotion, though 4th team on the day in the 2nd division and now trailing leaders Wallasey by 39 points, they also moved back to the top of the improvers league, some feat having won the trophy last season.
